A Whole New World

As I type this, I can only imagine many others have felt what I’ve felt - a feeling of being trapped, not being able to travel, surrounded by the same landscapes - simply a longing to explore new places.

And so as I continue to cancel trips scheduled pre-covid pandemic and try to remain optimistic about our country’s foreseeable future - I have had to figure out ways to discover new places.

As a New Jersey resident surrounded by sandy shores, I had been planning a trip to Maine for over a year. I was desperate to see the rocky coastlines, a mix of mountain and beach landscapes in its infinite beauty. Unfortunately, Maine does not want any visitors right now (and I totally understand and respect this) so I did the next best thing. I researched and discovered some semi-rocky coastlines within driving distance from me. I was fascinated when I learned that Long Island’s Northern coastline was created from a glacier, which is why the beaches are rocky.

Within the sleepy town of Wading River, NY the state park of Wildwood houses a 2 mile long beach. After following my GPS for approximately three hours, paying $10 for parking, and walking down a short trail - my eyes lit up from the expanse of blue in front of me. As I walked onto the beach and saw the bluffs to my left and right, and the boulders dotting the shoreline - I felt like I had stepped into a whole other world. Never did I think I’d be so happy to NOT see something similar to the Jersey shore.

And for this day of exploration, I felt free - the ironic combo of Adrenalin and peace somehow took over my mind and body while I walked and documented everything with my Nikon.
